In July we visited Simon’s family in the Netherlands. We had been a bit apprehensive how Joshua (the active boy he is) would handle the long flight, but in reality he did fantastic. He slept through most landings and take-offs and in all about half-the-time of the flights.

In the Netherlands we saw the benefits of trying to raise him bilingual, as he could understand his Dutch family perfectly. It was good to share with them and let them experience first-hand how active he is. For Simon it was of course also good to catch up with a lot of friends/family.

We stayed in a self-contained loft of a friend of Simon’s parents. This way we had our only little domain. Lisa was surprised with how hot it can be in the Dutch summer as even though 30 degrees is not much by Perth standards, the humidity makes it uncomfortable (especially in the loft without air-conditioning).

The house was near the river and close to Simon’s friend who had a boat. Once Sunday we had a great day on the water.

Simon’s parents babysat Joshua some days and his niece Jolien did the same a few evening, so we could go out. We managed to visit the ‘Floriade’ an agricultural show that is only once every 10 years.

Hello

a pricy magazine
a pricey magazine

Lisa is addicted to reading the 'Hello', a British gossip magazine which is available everywhere in Australia (being a former British colony). However, the magazine is not common in the Netherlands and Lisa had been looking for one practical all the time we had been in the Netherlands (almost three weeks). Finally she found one at Schiphol airport. She bought it straight away, only to realise (when Simon pointed it out) that the price was a whopping E6.35 (approximately AUS$12).

If that wasn't enough to be teased about, when boarding the plane we were offered one for free !!

(In all fairness, the price actually charged was only NFL6.35 or about AUS$5)
