Simon
Not much is changing for me in the last few years: the kids are taking up most of my 'spare time' which is fair enough as my work sees me travelling once a month around Australia (and Asia sometimes).

I guess the latest is that as part of my 'Australianisation' I am looking forward to summer and some decent temperatures (25-30C or more) rather than the cold winter (10C-ish at night).

Background

I was born on 8 June 1968 in the Netherlands. Here I spend most of my 'early years' going to school (De Sinnema, Develstein college & TU Delft Informatica). But after spending my last year in university doing my thesis in Loughborough UK, the travel-bug got me.

My (conscriptive) army-service I spend mostly in Seedorf, Germany and this was followed by holidays to Miami Playa, Spain (1987), Hammamet, Tunisia (1989), West USA (1991), East Australia (1992), New Zealand (1995) and finally West Australia (1995).

I'd met Lisa in the USA in 1991, but when we reacquainted ourselves in 95, sparks flew etc. A year later (1996) I migrated on a Permanent (Skilled) Visa and we got married in 2000 (with ceremonies\parties in both Australia & the Netherlands). In 2006 I obtained the Australian nationality (without relinquishing my Dutch one !).

Work

In 1997 I decided to migrate to Australia and thus leave my job with Pink Elephant and indeed my life in the Netherlands behind. One of the reasons why I was eligible for a permanent residency visa was because of my work-experience and education.

In the first few years I went through a number of jobs\organisations:

  • GE Capital IT (then Ferntree, now CSC) as contract Systems Engineer for 3 months
  • PDP Networks as Account and Operations Manager (for just over a year)
  • Corporate Computer Consultants (CCC) as Project Manager\Consultant for 3 months
  • Strategic Computer Solutions (via Volante now Commander) as Service Delivery Manager for years
  • Conan Group as Service Management Consultant for almost 2 years

When my relation with Conan Group deteriorated, I started looking around for another position. As luck would have it Lucid IT announced in March 2003 their ITIL training schedule in Perth. I contacted them and managed to convince them that Perth offered more potential than just public training.

Lucid IT is the most experienced provider of professional management and consulting services in IT Service Management in Australia. The company was founded in 2001 after a Management Buy Out of ‘PinkRoccade Australia Consulting Services’. Due to my previous employment with Pink Elephant (and relations with their Australian operations), I already knew 4 of the 5 directors.

So in April 2003 I started as their Principal Consultant and Branch Manager in Perth (and South Australia and the Northern Territory as well for good measure). This involves a lot of freedom (I work from a home-office), but also travel approximately once a month to either the branch (Darwin or Adelaide), other branches (Singapore a lot in 2005/2006) or for the company (Sydney).

Hobbies

As said do my kids currently take up most of my time available. In the past (the Netherlands and early years in Australia) I used to play badminton but I stopped this as evenings became too precious. I do like watching sport (even Australian sports like Aussie Rules -AFL- and cricket) and try to run or cycle when I can.

My computer background runs deep and deep-down I am still a gadget-freak (hence this website). And being a bloke I guess cars are never far away.
